I am moderately surprised that one of our more thoughtful yet provocative posters thought this was a well thought out post. Its about well thought out as looing in a rear vision mirror that has no peripheral vision.
Gold is a hedge against rampant inflation, ask those in Zimbabwe or the Weimar republic if they could have held gold, would they? Even your 1980s comparison is very weak.
Your referring to a decline in the pog following a massive spike, where gold did act as a very profitable hedge against world volatility. Gold was then pretty stable for around 15 years around $400/ounce & then it started to fall in the mid 90s due to the Clinton 'golden' economic era, CB gold sales & producer hedging. Since Sep 11 2001 for 10 years straight gold performed & some of that as oil was spiraling higher (inflationary?).

Is gold money? Can you go buy your groceries with it? No. But you can't buy your groceries with a US treasury either. So what is your point? Gold isn't an iou as printed money is, its the basis of money & it will grow in its importance as does Asia will in the coming years.

Your view on the US economy & I include public & private in that is naïve at best.
To say that things like levels of debt don't matter is the type of thinking that has got the Western world governments & Japan in the position that they are in. Tell that to the Greeks or the Spanish that your government liabilities don't matter. What a complete load of tosh.
Its commentary like this that actually make me want more exposure to gold, knowing there are idiots out there that don't recognize the situation that Western governments are in.
Is it salvageable? Quite possibly, but only if they recognize they have a problem & they actually do something about it. Will the US collapse? Probably not, (but it could...) but what will happen is it will slowly lose its complete & utter dominance of all things it enjoyed since about 1980. In fact it's already started.
