Perseng: "Enn said something else that was of vague interest but it was an unsubstantiated claim regarding our literacy and numeracy levels falling due to some sort of leftist conspiracy in our education system."
Please don't attribute to me what I have not said. I said nothing about any conspiracy which I don't for a moment think exists.
Rather, that the curriculum has become so crowded with ideological attempts to include, e.g, an indigenous focus, on all subjects, that the essential groundwork of literacy and numeracy is not being adequately taught.
And, if you are unaware of the woeful standard of literacy amongst Australian students you just haven't been noticing the many reports to this effect.
It's not the fault of current students, or even their teachers. Most of the current teachers were not themselves taught spelling and grammar. Only now, after many years of failed methods like 'whole word and whole sentence recognition' does there seem to be a plan to return to teaching phonics.
Not statistically valid, but two of my neighbours are teachers. One consistently says "we should of went" rather than "we should have gone" and the other admits she has no idea what a noun or adjective is. Probably has never even heard of an adverb!
