    So it's nothing to do with momentum and all to do with heat transfer rates. Turn the stove off, and the heat transfer stops. Momentum implies that movement continues after the applied force ceases.

    Actually, the bottom of the saucepan heats up really, really quickly, as it is designed to do, and conducts the heat to the contents. The ocean doesn't. Very poor analogy all round.
