To the contrary, the modern concept of God is entirely based on words and iteration upon iteration of mind-numbing interpretation of these words, yet history is littered with a mulitude of man-made and natural images depicting a very real entity, that present a completely different picture to that of the religions, and do not require words to give them added meaning. Some classic images are Atlas "upholding the heavens" (sic), the discus-thrower, the Parthenon in Athens and the Pantheon in Rome - each portraying a mushroom but you have to look deeply to see it.
As for the Pope, it seems he has stumbled yet again, for God is a magician of sorts and possesses a variety of magic wands, just as Apollon possesed many magic darts. What the world really needs is not another opiniated fungicidal cross-dresser, but something that will make everyone take a long hard look at themselves in stark light. The ancient Greeks knew this thing as narkissos, warned that if you fall in love with yourself you will perish, and inscribed the words "Know Thyself" above the front door of the Delphic temple for all to appreciate.
