In the 1980's we all thought it was a marvellous idea to have:
- a state owned bank
- a state owned airline
- a state owned Commonwealth Serum Laboratory
- a state owned health insurance provider
We all now look back at that quaintly and realise that privatisation benefited each body, advantaged taxpayers and moved these activities into the private sphere where they belong. We've all moved on.
Yet, in 2014, there are a few squealing about cuts to a state owned broadcaster! I'm one of many who believe the ABC in 2014 is no different from Commbank, Qantas, and CSL. There is absolutely no reason for taxpayers to provide 1 cent to a media body when there are commercial bodies doing the same job. There is no place for a state owned ABC - it is a last century concept. The government ought make it self funding, with a view to selling it off like Medibank.
