I too wondered about this trucking business awhile back and checked into the map and geography. I have been thru the Arckaringa on several occasions in the past and was wondering how Link would accomplish this as roads are far and few between and a road train on any of the unsealed roads around there didn’t look promising.
Augusta is 540 K on a sealed road with a stated driving time of 5 hours 33 min. I was not even aware that one could drive “directly” to Moomba from there. Upon checking the map I see that the distance is <50% longer at 823 K and 25 hours!. That’s ~270% more! Now I don’t know how much of that is sealed, but at 25 hours, which would have been estimated for a passenger vehicle, it couldn’t be much of a road and I am guessing not really suitable for a road train full of crude. I personally doubt that economically it could even be considered.
