Chairman sees recovery for Croesus
The chairman of troubled gold miner Croesus says the firm can recover, despite the company calling a trading halt on all of its securities.
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder based company became Western Australia's biggest home-grown gold miner after the collapse of Sons of Gwalia.
However, the company sought a trading halt late yesterday after announcing a first-half loss of $27 million.
The move caps one of the toughest years on record for the company, in which both its managing director and chairman have stepped down.
Massive cost blow-outs have also seen the closure of the company's Davyhurst operation.
Chairman Michael Kiernan says Croesus can bounce back, despite the trading halt.
"The tunnel is dark," he said.
"I can see a glimmer down the end of the road but there's got to be a reality - productivity is very low according to industry standards."
Mr Kiernan says full recovery depends heavily on a commitment by the work force and the local community.
