Copper is the hot metal enjoying a stellar run ... the latest surge will benefit BHP & OXR today:
"Base metals boomed with shares of US copper mining companies
bounding ahead as some metals hit all-time highs.
The surge followed remarks by Phelps Dodge Corp, the world's
second-largest copper producer, which said it expected prices to stay at
record highs as demand, especially from China and India, kept growing.
Copper is on a record high as a key component of infrastructure
and building construction and auto manufacturing.
The copper price reached a record and closing at $5144 tonne on
the London Metal Exchange.
New York copper was also strong, rallying to a fresh record high
of $2.3150 lb ($5104 tonne).
The strength in commodities prices helped lift the FTSE 100
share index above 6000 points for the first time since March 2001.
Zinc prices also hit a record peak in Europe and copper rallied
over 2 per cent to close in on last month's record high as buyers
returned to the market.
Three-month zinc futures on the LME rallied to a new all-time
peak of $2455 tonne, up 3.4 per cent on the previous session"
