When the American public has had enough, the American administration will pull out but place a "strong" man in power and back him big dollars and big weapons.
They will not only turn a blind-eye when he gasses and murders defensless citizens but will actively condone these actions.
Of course after a decade or so of bloodshed he will upset some future administration by getting too uppity which will of course lead to invasion.
