It takes at least 2 weeks to identify a new virus if the researchers are lucky. This does not preclude a new "form" of flu virus which is not in the current virus libraries. To identify a new virus, you first have to isolate it and culture it.
An alternative would be a Hendra virus like what infected the horses in QLD and the pigs in Malaysia. But the geographics at the moment seem more to imply a flu.
