Now that we are right into the summer season, my hopes for a full deployment any time soon are fading.

I initially thought that April 2015 would be the time when deployment would go ahead. It was the time of year chosen by them to deploy CETO 3, when the conditions are most settled.

I became optimistic when deployment commenced last year but that optimism is disappearing rapidly.

I am now of the belief that the possibility of suitable weather windows has passed until the end of summer.

At this time of year, cyclones can be expected at any time. Even though Perth is not in the cyclone zone, I am sure a cyclone on the northwest coast would generate adverse conditions right down the coast.

Having deployed the first buoy is still a massive achievement, especially if it is performing up to expectation.

If a cyclone was to hit the coast of WA soon, having just the one buoy in the water might not be a bad thing. It would allow them to evaluate the survivability of CETO 5, without risking the entire array.

At the end of the day, survivability is equally as important as operating efficiency. With that in mind, I am now prepared to wait until April to see them complete the project.

Not wishing to inflict pain on the residents of WA's tropics but a cyclone happening soon would be helpful. If we could get some waves around 5 or 6 metres off Garden Island, we would know how well the technology goes in big seas.
