You are correct in saying they are brought in, in regards to a large project, more of a nicety so as they are kept in the picture as to what is going to happen regarding the work force, just as they are brought into a company prior to it folding, e.g GMH, MITSI, FORD and they have little input, in that the decision has been made so tell your members thats the way it is, and payments for redundancies will be whatever.
This is a rough outline at the beginning and at the end, the bit in the middle is where they play havoc given the opportunity. I have had to be in the union most of my working life, I know how they work the worker, and I despise them for it, the worker is the pawn and somehow they turn it around that it is the workers best interest to retract their labour. There is a need for a union, but they seem to overstep the mark in being too enthusiastic to get the upper hand.
