If I understand you correctly I agree with this.
I do think that there is case for reaching out to each other to achieve this core purpose within ourselves.
I did read somewhere that genes "operate outside ourselves" and can also have a group effect.
This applies to our fellow creatures.
This, if my memory serves me correctly, means that spiders can weave complicated webs - the genes operate outside the spider (in a sense) for the benefit of the spider.
The ants' ability to collectively build ant-hills is an example of cooperation. Their genetic make up enables them to work cooperatively to the benefit of all, thus benefiting individuals to ensure the survival of their genes.
The ability to "operate outside ourselves" has resulted in humans often displaying altruistic behaviour.
