I will try to answer this without too many words. Smoking cessation is only a quick way to market but it is a highly attractive market anyhow ($2.4B). The theory is that the reason people (who will die if they cannot quit) do not succeed in quitting is because of the awful smokers cough which increases hugely when they quit. This is because the smoking suppresses the cough. The smoking cessation trial serves to test the hypotheses around Nadilol healing the lung and the need to cough. It will also serve as a phase 2 trial in smoking cessation. It appears that the marketing gurus have decided that an oral drug for smoking cessation is OK as people who will otherwise will die do not see oral administration as a burden. However for the really large markets of Asthma and COPD it will be necessary to develop an inhaled version which is underway. The smoking trial will serve, if successful, to prove the science and confirm the likelihood of the inhaled programme ($35B market). Success in the current trial will open the way to the smoking market quite quickly.
As to asthma, I don't think Nadilol can ever be considered a cure. It will heal the lung and make the lives of suffers much more comfortable. It will also largely eliminate deaths from asthma, currently something like 40,000 per year in USA alone. These deaths are largely caused by excess mucus in the lung and patients more or less suffocate. Nadilol should eliminate this. The same theory applies to Cystic Fibrosis where patients suffer from excess mucus in the lungs. Success in the current trial opens the way to huge potential for Nadilol. This says nothing about Cpn10 which is the drug which originally got me interested in this Company.
