I have been traveling consistently for the last 9 years and always get travel insurance even though I have never needed it. The reason I keep getting it is because I have a case in my family where travel insurance covered an unexpected and very serious illness which required the patient to be air lifted from one country to another, complex surgery, and something like four weeks in hospital before being repatriated back to Australia. We estimated that the medical bill in total would have been something like $100k.
