I found this sort of announcement as unusual for a tech company to state they suddenly have 1m+ unique visitors with no search engine influence and only 8 or so links into zipt.com.

It's very amateurish sparke. The whole announcement was a total ramp and has no effect whatsoever on the fundamental value of the company. With Internet marketing it's all about the search engine results (whether paid or organically). Right now a search on 'VOIP software' or 'voip phone 2g' or similar gives nothing for ZIP. For organic results it can take time, sometimes 6 to 12 months, particularly when using competitive words, so it would be interesting to know whether they are currently working on this. It's not cheap but it's worthwhile.

Paying for 'hits' might look great to the uneducated but the reality is this may have a long-term negative effect if it is found that these hits are not genuine and the URL penalised. This also happens in organic searches with Google if unsavoury practises are used to improve position.

The company needs to concentrate on their main aim and stop producing these fluffy announcements if they want sustained support. A little bit less investor ramping and a bit more on the end-user marketing. This company has potential, but I'm not convinced.
