Coopec they picked a location for a moon base in the 60s. Nobody wanted to pay for it so it never happened . Picking a location for a battery factory is great. Tell me when they build it and what happens to the price of rare earth metals when they go into mass manufacturing massive capacity batteries.

As you posted above "Making the move economic is a fair way off at the moment"

Until it is economic I would suggest no investors will want to pay. There will be technology demonstrators like Tesla investing heavily in R&D with high unit cost vehicles for the quirky people that dont mind waiting for recharge but with sub $100 oil and unit rice of the vehicle substantially higher they will be pushing s..t uphill to compete in a practical way for public to buy their vehicles and even if the public did buy in the electricity infrastructure to recharge in a reasonable time doesn't presently exist.

If you cover your house in solar panels and have a 10KW system you could refuel your Tesla in just over 5 hours so long as the sun was shining and you had the special cables capable of carrying the full 10KW from your panels to your Tesla recharger. Lets say you dont actually care about total Co2 emissions and get it from the grid (in australia from coal and gas power stations) your charge rate is still limited to the cable sizing your house has. If you use a domestic power point you can draw 240V and 10 A * power factor of say 0.95 = 2.2kw which to completely refill the Tesla 56KWh battery would take 25 hours.

The slow recharge time can be addressed by upgrading the electrical cable infrastructure in your premises but the domestic grid is not built for everyone's premises to have this massive power draw. The entire domestic supply grid will need to be upgraded to avoid collapse. The electricity generators will not have the capacity to feed the upgraded grid, they will need more power plants. The demand for power plant fuel will increase, this will increase the price of domestic coal and gas. It is going to cost a lot of money. It is going to take very expensive oil to justify changing like this. Domestic solar will help to offset grid upgrades but the recharge rate is currently too slow to be practical. I can refill a petrol tank in a couple of minutes. If it is cloudy i cant go to work in my car because I cant recharge it in time. It will improve with massive R&D and infrastructure investment but will take expensive oil to justify.
