Moondoong, I've no doubt some people just go through the motions of mouthing those words to get Australian Citizenship. But personal experience of a lifetime spent working in communities with large migrant populations tells me the overwhelming majority do at least as well at honouring those values as we 'currency lads and lasses' .
Following WW2 Australia welcomed people fleeing from postwar Europe and although the process of merging with the locals was at times painful, the longer term result was well worth it. The story following the Vietnam War was a similar one!
Which leaves us with the question of why are asylum seekers and refugees being treated so differently today?
