Lapdog - one thing is to see things as a tourist and another is to live there, work there, pay taxes there, be subject to the ongoing corruption that exists at every level of government and society.

Italy has been one of the great melting pots of this world - no arguments.
It has been conquered by Greeks, Goths, Visigoths, Moors, Normans, French, Spanish, Austrians and Germans
This fertile potpourri of cultures has given birth to the Renaissance, opera, incredible art and literature, and one of the finest cuisines in the world.

It is now however an ageing country at the mercy of its closest neighbours who are now conquering Italy not with force - but with sheer numbers with a much more youthful demographic.

I'm sure that if you were to take that same trip from Amalfi to Venice in 25 years time - you may find a very different experience
