re: have another rum in the meantime hey, sounds like tensions are building up, with the approval not yet announced. Reminds me of that classic film, "Wages of Fear"
Lighten up and have a rum. Or two rums for that matter. Broach the cask and let's have a break for a while. That way you'll be more able to ignore loose talk from the bilge aimed more at personal entertainment than enlightenment. These things do not resolve themselves overnight.
The EPA have prove themselves worthy Olympians over the McArthur River diversion proposal by sending Xstrata back to the drawing board with nine issues of concern to answer. The Xstarata response is expecte back in a few weeks and the company is appreciative of the opportunity to finalise the application.
The good Professor Dr Lyn Allen, who heads the EPA up has proven herself open minded and flexible. The NTG were said to have taken a real risk in appointing her because of her history as founder of the ECNT, the leading green organisation in the NT. These fears have proved groundless.
The PER is still in the hands of the environmental assessors and has more than likely been passed on to the Federal Minister for Environment for his decision. Well at al least I hope so by now! Of course, under the terms of the PER process no further assessment is required, this being completed by the EPA on behalf of both governments. He can take up to 30 days before he puts his stamp on it, so have another rum while you wait.
Then, and only then, will it go to that super Olympian, Kon Vatskalis, the NT Minister for Mines who grants the mining permit. Word around his department is that they are waiting for the assessment to arrive and oxide mining will proceed.
