For those who may have read yesterday's thoughts ......
In my post to you yesterday, I wrote ......
< Go back on my posts and check who “owns” Topix.net, a “partner” of Looksmart. Now see if they are listed in the Top 200 here. I’ll make it easier G, T, KR & Mc > - (see footnote)
WHooops!! Read the following about TOPIX.NET written by "Bambi" (an Internet "space", authority) in her column today!!
< On Tuesday, I mentioned that Christian Hendricks, vice president of Interactive Media at McClatchy Company's (MNI : 49.05, -1.25, -2.5% ) Internet operations, said if there was one Internet asset he'd be interested in acquiring, it was search technology, specifically specialized search. See previous column.
Hendricks is particularly impressed with Topix.net, which McClatchy will own 25% of after the Knight Ridder acquisition closes. Topix.net breaks down news into 360,000 (and growing) topics. You can access by the most obscure topic to your zip code.
NWS (18.06, +0.03, +0.2%) is also interested in buying a search company before the end of May, according to Rob Sanderson at American Technology Research.
"A MySpace search deal is expected within 45-days; the company is talking to all players," wrote Sanderson. "An announcement would likely be seen as a positive to the winner."
This does not surprise me one iota. I've always said that if media companies are to keep their precious eyeballs, they had better realize that it's not just about entertainment and the best material.
Programs and news have become commoditized, in my opinion. It's about serving the on-demand generation's needs. And, frankly those needs are expressed through their searches. While many people know this in theory, it's not always a priority in practice. >

It's all happening soon, is MHO of course.

Footnote: Topix.net???
"Initial rollout on the 177 Gannett, Tribune and Knight Ridder news sites has seen over 200 million articles categorized and driven over two million readers in the first sixty days."

Now bear in mind that McClatchy Newspapers have just bought out Knight Ridder & in doing so, are "inheriting" the part ownership of Topix.net held by Knight Ridder & it is now a certainty to "add" their own swag of newspapers to this "network" .....
