Saddam kept the peace with a brutal totalitarian control over opposing factions that no one else has been able to control. Look what happened to Iraq when we liberated it.
Ditto with Gaddafi in Libya .....ditto with Assad in Syria.....
Eliminate the "Strongman", and everything descends into a cesspit of violent and uncontrollable disorder....
Saddam used gas to suppress Kurd uprisings....gas supplied by the US/UK for his use against Iran. It worked.

Sad to say, Iraq & Libya would be better off with their despotic leaders at the respective helms, and those seeking to destroy Syria similarly should learn, back off, and let Assad sort out his problems with he sicko cannibal insurgents.
