" The resource extraction market is expected to show the most rapid gains among the major markets, as the treatment requirements for produced water in oil and natural gas extraction continue to rise, and as water recycling and reuse increase to satisfy the needs of expanded hydraulic fracturing activities. The so-called flowback water extracted during hydraulic fracturing – or fracking – of coal seam gas (CSG) wells can contain biocides and other toxins that kill off bacteria used to treat sewage, possibly shutting down the whole system for days or longer.

"In early 2014 AGL did make preliminary inquiries to establish if Hunter Water and Mid-Coast Water could take untreated flowback water," the spokesman said. "Both confirmed this was not an option as untreated flowback water was incompatible with their systems. AGL then went to tender for liquid wastewater treatment services.
"Transpacific was awarded the contract on the basis that disposal of the treated wastewater from their Environment Protection Authority-licensed Kooragang Island facility complied with all relevant legislation."
All up, 600,000 litres of flowback water was sent to the Newcastle site for treatment from late October to mid-December
