My understanding is that the moment the deal is executed you own the stock, not when you settle three days later. If you buy i.e. execute the deal, the day before the Ex dividend date you get the dividend. If you buy on or after the Ex dividend date you do not get the dividend.
Also I believe the ASX determine the Ex dividend date as four trading days before the Companies stated Record date.
But I could be mistaken on both counts, sadly it's been known to happen before
