Lithium-air has been on the radar for quite some time now, much higher energy density, quicker charging times and longer overall battery life than lithium-ion.
The problem is it's only theoretical at the moment, if there's a breakthrough which enables it to be mass produced it will be a game-changer for the electric car and home battery industries (it could even mean the death of the traditional electricity supply networks as we know them).
A lot of battery research is going on at the moment, but even if there is some new tech which doesn't use lithium it won't be possible to bring a product to market on a global scale for quite some time now.
This means lithium-ion will be the go-to battery for a number of years yet, even if it is just a transitional product. Of course I'm hoping lithium-air overcomes the hurdles for our sake!
