My chemical engineering days are several decades past, but I have done quite a bit of recent reading on graphite spheroidisation, and I can assure Utrade that it is not the same as the accretion of powdered material into spheroidal lumps. The diameter of the resulting spheroids is much less than the mean diameter of the flakes used to produce the battery material. The milling process wears the flakes down, and also rolls them into the potato shapes that everybody talks about.

On Bobsa's point regarding substantially reducing the milling losses in the future, we can only hope he is right. So far, no work has been published which gives us any real prospect that the job will be done without losses of the order of 50% or more. And it's not too obvious that people will put a great amount of work into that area for a while, because the potential gains may not be that great. If the raw fine-flake is worth $700 per tonne, and perhaps $1500 after purification to 99.9%, the value more than doubles during the spheroidisation to somewhere between $3500 and $4000 per tonne. Coating raises that to $6000 to $8000. So losing even a quite substantial amount of the low-value raw material probably doesn't have that big an impact on the bottom line. If you read the published work by the developers, and also the announcements by the graphite producers, it's notable what little concern exists about this problem. Looks like it's a second-order issue.

Accretion of powder into spherical lumps! How the hell did you get that from my discription of the process? I can only assume one of two things you either 1) dont know what your talking about or 2) are deliberately trying to mislead other who dont have a technical understand on this forum. I assume its the later due to your chemical engineering degree. For the record i was talking about spheroidation via thermal plasma jet. These are completely different process which i expect someone with a chemical engineering degree should understand.
You have peaked my curiosity about your research could you please quote the papers that your refering to?
