Looking at the satellite images you posted, it looks like many images of mining operations from all over the world. I bet if close up pictures of the Mt weld tailing pond where permitted it wouldn't look much different to these from Baotou that seem to be intended to cause the maximum environmental concern.
If you think we are better here, take a look at the environmental effects from mining at Queenstown Tas and Broken Hill NSW. Just to mention a couple of sites.
