My mum lived in a nursing home (several of them actually) for almost 5 years prior to her death. Try paying the required bond (necessitating the sale of her 2-bedroom modest little unit in which she had lived since 61 years of age) and $800 plus per week for her care, without significant money, as one's life comes to a grand but elderly conclusion, as did that of my mother's.
I am proposing her case simply as a possibility for others. In her case, she was an aged pensioner who had cared for her brother-in-law in his old age, and who had been given more money from his will as a consequence when aged 84, when she inherited more money than she had ever seen in her life before. We were able to get the best nursing home accommodation we could find for her, but, without much money left, I would be very concerned indeed. I have heard of children having to sneak in food for their loved ones at very ordinary nursing homes as they were periodically underfed.
