The way Pell couched his initial denial was laughable. He said he had no recollection of the conversation, a conversation which (at the time of his denial) occurred 40 years ago. I would have thought that the suggestion a priest was sexually assaulting children would come as such a shock that you'd remember the conversation no matter how long ago the allegation occurred. Unless of course you dedicated your life to putting the brakes on investigations of child sexual assault, in which case you'd have so many conversations like this one you'd be unable to remember which one was which.
