Agree that well design and subsequent performance is not an exact science, especially in virgin territory. A little surprising that JV partners planned for this contingency but are not planning to expedite remedial action as soon as rig is available. Do they want more production data before working over the northern wells?

Any way the beauty of this game is you never lose production you just defer it to a later period, and who knows what the price of oil will be next year.
