I guess phd's dont seem to be much of an indicator of intelligence these days and probably more a desperation to avoid the outside world for as long as possible...
With my wife's phd and my quite high paid employment, we had no problem at all with being able to afford first a smaller place in the suburbs, and then places closer into the city center and later investment properties...
My son's, one with phd as has his wife, also had no problem with finance and purchase of a suitable home and eventual scaling up as their equity and financial position improved, but of course you have to have something more than a phd in finger-painting which seems to be the run of the mill these days...
