    Thanks Periform .

Actually , I have been doing a bit of homework on different versions of exterior cladding for it's insulating capabilities . I am a bit surprised at the lack of or amount of confusing information out there . It doesn't seem that there is a one stop shop which compares all the products on an efficiency basis vs a cost basis . Having said that , there is quite a bit of info available if you spend the time looking .
Also , builders are becoming better educated on efficiency so if you find the right one , they can be really helpful .

Fortunately my place will have the ideal orientation so I've already got a bit of a headstart there . I've discovered that paying particular attention to installing conventional insulation correctly and making sure that the house is sealed properly from the get go will also make a considerable difference .

There is no doubt that you can overspend on efficiency . I make a point of asking people at every opportunity about their new houses . What works , what doesn't etc . Learnt quite a bit about double glazing for example .

As an example , I've had an estimate for a geothermal heat pump arrangement . Effectively full house hvac with the benefit of free hotwater as a byproduct . It's between 25 and 30k for a 25 - 30 square house . Very low running costs apparently ( I'm yet to see the data ) .

So , as you can see , efficiency has price .
