Projects like this one is another indicator that CWE is thinking more widely (out of necessity) on cost reduction strategies. It has recognised that drilling and cementing massive piers into the seafloor using jack-up-rigs is a significant fraction of the total cost of each CETO unit. (The cylindrical piers for a C6 would be 4 times as massive again as for the C5s.) We discussed the possibility of alternative anchoring methods here about two years ago.
By using the engineering expertise at UWA and an ARC grant, CWE gets a free carry of novel practical ideas which it can then either adopt or modify further. It will take three years. As CWE consolidates its sequence of successes, as with the PWEP array, it establishes its professional credibility with other institutions who in turn are willing to take on research projects that have prospects of definite relevance.
Another major example is the Power Take Off unit being developed by Bosch Rexroth in UK. I don’t see a risk of this being unsuccessful since several other companies have already produced compact PTOs for their own WECs.
It is very instructive to read the very carefully worded justification summaries of the 250 projects on the ARC list. Much further detail would be included in the full project proposals. So what kind of additional ARC funded projects would you recommend for CWE to pursue?

It's not necessarily that BR won't be able to do it - but what if they decide it's not in their business interests to do so? Where does that leave Cwe?
