Some of the institutions who have customers owning holdings in all levels of companies have a share lending programme for their customers. That means customers get a premium for lending their shares for trading.
Their shares go into the lending programme and are used for trading and then returned. I don't think this type of trading makes its way to the short lists on the ASX or ASIC as I don't think they are official short positions, Im not sure about that aspect though.
