Chuck, I am sorry to have to tell you that these people were misfits on ego trips.
I was pleased to be able to have a look at them on the SBS doco which dealt with the subject. Couldn't help noticing that their leader had tatoos on his face and neck - the kind of guy who signals his problems loud and clear - and a history of demonstrating against whatever was on offer. He had burned his American passport so as to make life a bit more difficult for himself and had it not been for all the borders he had to cross I bet he would have taken along his pit bull terrier - you know the kind - with metal studs on its collar.
Funny how these "peaceful" types bristle with aggression.
