I think that in the scheme of things...ignoring international law, ignoring the processes of the United Nations, and ignoring the Geneva Convention gives no real cause for celebration... If you think that placing Australia's future in the hands of America gives it greater security then good for you... However I suggest that broad consensus among nations is more important for the future... This war was all about undermining the single institution that can critise the US, the UN.... Look at some recent events...The US will not allow its citizens to come under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, the US will not allow basic human rights, sanctioned by the Geneva Convention, to those it captured in Afganistan, it has ignored the Kyoto agreement... Australia's current gov has no principled position on any of these issues either ... I'm not sure the US has the best interests of the world at heart, no matter whether or not Australians have escaped death in Iraq. I'm happy for the Iraqi people, but before you say that the 'coalition' was right ask why Iraq and what effect will this success have on the gung ho yanks...
