At the end of the day both the Lib's and labor will be aiming to win the next election, at the moment with Labor ahead in the polls Shorten position as leader is safe but Abbott is not.

I don't accept that Turnbull has no chance at taking the leadership, while he is not liked by the far right in the liberal party they did concede earlier this year when the leadership spill was looming that they would back Turnbull if that was what it took to win the next election.

The other reason I believe Turnbull has a chance of taking the leadership is that when he lost the leadership (remember it was by 1 vote) he announced he was quitting politics but then changed his mind. Word has it that Howard convinced him he would get another crack, now keep in mind Turnbull doesn't need a job or the salary the only motive I can see for him staying in politics is for the chance to lead again.

Turnbull is very popular with voters so if the liberal party have any hesitation about winning the next election putting Turnbull up as leader would guarantee them a win
