We have the right to know, but our system is such that neither side really has to be upfront or honest.
Especially the opposition. The small target approach normally works pretty well if history is a guide. They say governments lose elections, oppositions don't win them.
Seems too much to ask, or expect, that a political party could lay out it's honest approach and let the people decide based on that.
Far too easy to promise everything, deliver nothing and change everything once in power.
