Let us assume that the US government sold 8,000 tonnes of gold in the 1960's to pay for the Viet Nam War.

What difference would it have made?

    None at all!

The wealth of America and the ability of its government to meet is obligations does not depend on 8,000 tonnes of metal hidden under Kentucky or New York. It depends of the production and sale of goods and services in America and the share of that value taken by the US government in taxation.

The obsession with this gold is fetichism.
