Justis, it appears that the Liberal Party campaign machine has already splurged ~$1m in Canning; with Tony Abbott racking up three visits in addition to those of other senior members of Cabinet including Julia Bishop.

Yet the latest Fairfax IPSOS poll found the 2PP running at 52:48 in favour of the LNP; representing a voter backlash of almost 10% and 3 times that normally experienced at by-elections by Coalition governments.

It's that sort of development which is prompting investigative journalist to write as Lenore Taylor & **rielle Chan have done in The Guardian:

"... Ministers told Guardian Australia they believed a challenge was inevitable and that the current situation was untenable. One minister suggested the prime minister could yield to a “tap on the shoulder” by a delegation from his frontbench, but most others said this was almost inconceivable. ..."
"... But the anticipated “truce” ahead of the poll has been shattered by the well placed and highly damaging leadership stories, which could also influence the result. ..."
