First of all there is the question of the origin of life. Most of the scientists do not say much about that because it is a mystery. The bits have not been worked out. Parts are, e.g. we know where amino acids and other organic acids and adenine molecules arose in the pre-life time - from lightning etc.
Second there is the origin of species. Once life began on earth how did the species arise? It is here that Evolution comes into play. Those who believe in Genesis as an historical account believe God went "zap" and there were all the adult species. On the other hand Biologists say the species arose by a slow process from simple to more complex living things. I think no Biologist would deny that an Evolutionary process occurred. The evidence is overwhelming. However, where those who believe in God sometimes go astray is they think that as a consequence of believing in evolution one has to reject the idea of God creating life. That is not necessary. Beliefe in Evolution and belief in God are quite compatible. Even the Pope agrees.
