"TWO new sniffer dogs will help Tasmania Police ramp up the fight against ice — as the number of drivers killed or seriously injured who tested positive for speed or ice skyrockets.
On the same day that Assistant Commissioner Mark Mewis said the number of post-crash drivers found with methylamphetamine in their blood samples had jumped to 18 per cent this financial year, the State Government launched a campaign targeting ice importation and access points.
Police Minister Rene Hidding said the prevalence of crystal methylamphetamine was of “great concern” to the Government.
“The increase of the detection among drivers and in crashes is an absolute concern,’’ Mr Hidding said.
“There’s no question that the level of training required to deal with somebody affected by the drug ice is a whole new level of training for all emergency service workers.’’
He said the two labradors would join the multi-agency Operation Intercept, which targets drug supply and sale."
