They could easily be. The ABC ran a whole news item about pollution from Linc Energies abandoned GTL site at Chinchilla: I checked the situation with a local farmer out there, the whole thing was untrue - polluted dams, polluted water, smells, complaints from locals, the lot. Bizarre.
But dogs can certainly be trained to sniff out non-natural, and even inorganic substances, like explosives. So I'd be surprised if they can't be trained for crystal meth, which is organic.
