Schiff was born to a Jewish family in Poland and immigrated to the United States where he worked as a carpenter.
In the late 1960s, he was ruined - losing his money and that of his clients — because of an investment in a tax shelter that was revealed to be a Ponzi scheme.

Schiff has spent a good part of his life in jail for tax offences, you'd think once would be enough but apparently not, he's got convictions that make Al Capone look like a good bloke.
