I can find bad news everywhere, but I'm an optimist. The last time I was in the USA which was a year ago, help wanted posters were appearing in shop windows. I spent a lot of time in the USA during the GFC and while things weren't perfect I didn't see much real poverty and what I did see was mostly self-inflicted.
The GFC was actually caused by panic, not by debt, the debt was manageable but once the panic started it all came unravelled and even the Federal Reserve didn't have the resources to shore up all the banks.

Goldbugs tell me endlessly about doctored US employment and economic figures, they're doctored when they're good, but factual when they're bad, they live in a fantasy world of gold $5,000, $10,000, they'll be rich and the rest us poor.

You've been telling us about the great depression for years, it's a personal joke between my wife and I, she says "what about the great depression" when we go somewhere or on something that's chokka.

The unemployment rate in the USA is 5.1%, according to the BLS, but 25% in the Great Depression. How do you reconcile those numbers? How do you account for massive car sales and aircraft orders? Layoffs make news, hiring doesn't, I thought you'd be able to work that out.

They read Zerohedge and Peter Schiff, loony Pastor Lindsey Williams and watch television shows that predict economic mayhem, it's all bollox of course, the great crash never happens, only in their minds as they hunker down with a collection of yellow metal which has declined in value for over 4 years straight.
