They use opposing lasers rather than masses, and can measure movements as small as the rotation of the earth. So for an analogy on the other end of the discussed scale, companies paid up to 150k for these military units, and they still have to be enclosed in expensive, heavy, big flameproof enclosures to be safe in hazardous areas. The electronics enclosed was designed to survive the impact and precision needed to aim the gunbarrel of a howitzer tank and later a scud missile. Im not guessing whether or not the components in this technology would be suitable or physically rugged enough for this particular application but you hit the nail on the head... So many possibilities to consider.

Im struggling to think of any large or small scale sensing application that i have used that couldnt be at least a bit improved with LumiMEMS technology.

Its all about the marketing.
