yak re: banjar: can you defend this I skimmed through your list. I have no doubt that without the benefit of internet you probably wouldn't even know where Indonesia is, such is your reliance on the web for coming up with the facts, and an opinion.
One thing I failed to mention is that if you associate many of the events, with who happened to be President at the time, perhaps you could understand better what was happening.
During Suhartos years everything was tightly controlled, there were various movements operating but they were generally suppressed, if not eliminated. Then suddenly Habibie became President, and he didn't have a clue what was going on. He got a free ride because Indonesia had suddenly become democratic, and to everybodies mind, you were free to do what you wanted to do. Next Gus Dur was elected President,(after a lot of backroom deals) and everybody was happy as he was well respected and a wise old man. He too didn't have a clue and was replaced by Megawati. Everybody loved her because her father had bought independence to Indonesia. Whilst everybody remembered that, and how charasmatic he was as a speaker, they all forgot that he was a hopeless manager, and he sent the country to the point of bankruptcy. He daughter had about the same management skills, but without the charisma as a speaker. She had the rug pulled out from under her and the current President took over.
What is significant is that between Suharto and SBY, there has really been no-one running the country, they were too busy trying to hang onto their position. Now finally Indonesia gets a President who appears competent and strong enough to be able to actually successfully run the country, but whilst he is trying to consolidate his control, in between major natural disasters, the armchair cowboys start trying to shoot him down and lynch him for the sins and incompetence of those who preceded him.
The Indonesians have realised that they are in a new era, and want to make a go of it.
It's about time you woke up too Yak. The world has moved on since the fall of Saigon.
