I went through a stage when I felt that I was the equal of everyone else and didn't want to acknowledge my superiors. I was probably around seventeen years old at the time, but then I grew up and whilst I personally care little for the queen, ( i wouldn't be bothered going to see her, yet I would be delighted/honoured to receive an award etc from her) I acknowledge the generally positive role she plays in our society and the importance institutions like the monarchy play in society. It doesn't hurt to go with the flow sometimes.
You only have to look at the commonwealth countries to see that they were left in a very good comparative state when the brits moved out. The same cannot be said for the management by other countries.
