I think it's just another bogus mystical assumption.
I like Tom Campbell's interpretation better. There's not really a wave function collapse. That's just a metaphor. In my own words, in relation to the quantum, if which way information exists we will find that a particle pattern has been rendered. If which way information does not exist or has been erased then we will find that a probability wave pattern has been rendered, or rather, will be rendered for us when we check the results. Question - If a tree falls in the woods and no one is watching does it make any noise? Answer - There is no tree, there is no woods, it's just digital information. If nobody is watching then it will not be rendered, like when you move something off the screen on a computer game. Does the tree still exist when you move the curser so the tree goes off the screen?
