Shares in medical research company Biota leapt more than 30 per cent on opening on Wednesday, after the company announced a medical breakthrough in its in program to develop a drug to combat HIV/AIDS. Biota has developed its proprietary N-MAX technology, which create nucleoside drugs able to operate at enhanced levels of activity with reduced toxicity. A previously developed nucleoside drug, AZT, is a leading anti-HIV treatment with sales of about $1.5 billion worldwide has been a primary target for the Biota research. "The AZT-mimic research has been a remarkable success," Biota Group chief executive Peter Molloy said. "In less than a year, [president and chief scientist] Dan Cook's scientific team has demonstrated proof-of-concept for the N-MAX technology and discovered a series of novel compounds that could lead to new treatments for HIV/AIDS." The lead compound series, B-109, is covered by Biota-filed patents. Biota shares were up 28.4 per cent, or 13.5¢, at 61¢.
